CASTILLO DE TORRES TORRES

- DESCRIPTION
The castle occupied a strategic location at the entrance to the Kingdom of Valencia and was in use until the beginning of the 17th century, when it was partially demolished by Don Miguel de Vallterra.
The origin of the town of Torres Torres dates back to the Muslim era. At that time, it is likely that the current castle already existed, next to the Arab population centre of Torox. This castle was one of the defensive bastions on the road to Valencia. Due to its elevated location on a hill, the fort also controlled the passage through the Via del Palancia, the traditional road that links the Aragonese and Valencian territories.
In the Reconquista campaign of the 13th century, King Jaume I took the castle and its population and donated it, along with other towns, to the knight Beltrán de Bellpuig, whose descendants held the lordship of the Barony of Torres Torres until 1445, the year in which it was passed on to Juan de Vallterra. In the 18th century, the castle and its barony passed into the hands of the Castellví family. This castle is built on a polygonal plan that, according to the documentary references that have come down to us, had up to four towers plus the Keep. Today, the bastion only preserves two of these towers and the main tower, which is the most outstanding element in its structure. Within the castle grounds, there are also remains of several buildings, with some doors and windows in a good state of preservation. There are still vestiges of the walls that surrounded it. Somewhat removed from this stronghold, the original core of Torres Torres was created.
The strategic value of this fortress meant that it played an active role in the war conflicts in which the Kingdom of Valencia was involved until the 19th century. Thus, during the Carlist Wars of the 19th century, its defensive structure was partially modified to adapt it to new military techniques and weapons. In this way, part of its physiognomy was altered to allow artillery elements to be used from its highest parts. The loopholes were also modified and the narrow straight openings gave way to round holes through which firearms could be fired.
